At its very core, the technology of Newgulf is far different from any sort of mechanical or electronic construct. Though much knowledge was wiped out by the Blight, most of the foundations for machines - as well as the relics of the past - have survived.

Simple mechanical devices are used, when they form a more elegant solution than magic-tech. For example, simple objects like levers, hinges, pulleys, and even clockwork are used regularly. But the realm of the high-tech is very different.

High-tech machines are made as a synthesis of Magic and bio-organic materials, and the interface to use the most complex ones is almost always magical in nature. Machines cannot self-power, and must be fed by either their users' own magic or by Ommatidia crystals found on The Surface and infused with an individual's magic. Energy gathered from these crystals is very efficient, so people are willing to take the risk of The Surface for the potential gain.

Great Materials

The four categories of bio-organic materials that can be enhanced magically are Chitin, Actin, Haemol, and Spiracle. They can be roughly compared to metals, plastics, lubricants/hydraulic fluids, and wiring, and are each associated strongly with one type of magic. Because of the high-tech machines are built with a combination of these materials, they can frequently end up resembling actual organisms. Notably, when damaged, the Spiracle and Actin resemble veins and muscle tissue, and the Haemol is thick, yellow blood. Ommatidia is the power that makes technology run, when added power is necessary, but many argue that it is a substance unto itself, and not one of the Great Materials.

Actin

Actin resembles cartilage or plant-fibre, and the most common kinds of Actin are a ruddy-brown color. It is imbued with Flesh Magic to give it life, and depending on the strength of the magic and purity of the material, it can be the softest substance in the world, as well as the most adaptable. Generally, it is a rubbery or plastic material that does not conduct, and that is yielding instead of strong. It can also be prepared to expand and contract, based on electrical stimuli, and can be fashioned into machine-muscles ro bend hinges or turn motors.

If made in fibrous strands, it can be fashioned into elastic thread of great flexibility. Actin does not conduct electricity or sound, but it can be damaged by intense heat, and will grow hot if it is induced to expand and contract without being suspended in Haemol.

Chitin

Chitin resembles bone or wood-fiber, and the most common kinds of Chitin are a dark grey color that shifts toward blue, purple, and green in various light. It is imbued with Bone Magic to give it life, and depending on the strength of the magic and purity of the material, it can be the hardest substance in the world, as well as the strongest. It is unresisting. It can also be prepared to have an intense memory, for fashioning powerful springs, and its structure can be aligned to produce a fairly strong magnet.

If made in fibrous strands, it can be fashioned into cable tethers of great tensile strength. Chitin does not conduct sound, electricity, or heat.

Haemol

Haemol resembles victor or a muddy glue, and the most common kinds of Haemol are a rich, deep yellow color. It is imbued with Blood Magic to give it life, and depending on the strength of the magic and purity of the material, it can be the most fluid lubricant in the world. It can also be prepared to have an intense solvent ability, for fashioning powerful solutions or suspensions, notably for medicine. Haemol will gradually repair damage caused to surrounding Actin and Chitin, though the process produces increasingly inferior repairs in imperfect-quality materials over time.

Inside of high-tech machines with Actin muscles, it is used as a heat-conducting suspension and lubricant. It conducts dangerously well, magic as well as sound and (obviously) heat.

Spiracle

Spiracle resembles veins or hair-fibers, and the most common kinds of Spiracle are a bright blue color. It is imbued with Breath Magic to give it life, and depending on the strength of the magic and purity of the material, it can be the best conductor of magic, as well as the finest gauge substance that maintains structural integrity. It is almost always used as a conductor of electricity or information, in high-tech machinery, though it can also help transport special Haemol substances in order to hasten machine healing.

If made in fibrous strands, it can be fashioned into an incredibly lightweight (and expensive) kind of durable cloth, which can be made into magic and force-distributing armor or heat resistant bodysuits.

Ommatidia

Whether Ommatidia crystals really are a 'fifth Material', and whether or not they are based in Void Magic, is a hotly contested subject. Whatever they are, Ommatidia crystals cannot be made from scratch, but are found in dimly-lit, cool areas of The Surface. Frequently they are found in caves, or even in the lower levels of long-abandoned buildings in the forgotten city of Lapidum. They are a pale, fleshy pink color, hard and multi-faceted gems that break into smaller pieces like sugar or quartz when manhandled too roughly. They provide fuel to vehicles, to high end technology, to certain weaponry, and [some believe] to the Turritella itself. They are very hard to come by, and very expensive.

They are infused with a person's own magic. It must be given willingly, and leaves the donor drained for an amount of time proportionate to the power they let slide away. Donors are lethargic, weak, and unable to use magic after creating an Ommatidia crystal, but the power stored away in them lasts for a very long time, making the sacrifice worth the gain.
